The DW Organisation is sorry to share news of the passing of Capt Chris Graves, peacefully in his sleep on 30th November. Chris joined the team in 1977 and dedicated over 30 years of his life to the Stages Race. He was the timekeeper with a friendly word for all paddlers early in the morning, and again later in the day as they finished. Chris was renowned for his mental arithmetic - always calculating the provisional results as a boat crossed the finish line and then later running a paper check!
He was diagnosed with cancer in 2000 with a very short life expectancy of just a few weeks. In early 2001 his sister told him that if he didn't get out of bed and get fit he was going to let the race down. Chris was ready for action by Easter! He retired from DW in 2007, but still spent Easter weekends out on the course. He will be sadly missed by the DW family.
The funeral will take place at Noon on Thursday 21st December at West Suffolk Crematorium, near Bury St Edmonds. No Flowers. Donations will go to the Evelina Trust at St Thomas' Hospital (race finish hosts) via funeral directors: C E Fuller & Co, 23, Hall St., Soham, Cambs., CB7 5BN
