Taking on the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race is arguably the ultimate canoeing challenge, and requires careful and determined preparation. Long distance races, with multiple portages are the best preparation, and many crews only start practicing these with the Waterside and Thameside races in the weeks before the event. For those coming from outside the southern region, doing enough preparation races is even harder.
The DW and British Canoeing Marathon Racing Committee have nominated a year-round and country-wide series of “classic” races which aspiring DW competitors should consider doing to further improve their preparation. These offer challenges from 13 miles to 96, but all with some of the difficulties that DW crews might expect on the big race.
